Village Internet now in Blantyre. What kind of stories are we going to see through OmniScope?
Stick around as we plan to conduct a baseline survey of GBV and child abuse around Domwe trading center in rural Blantyre.
OmniScope: Facilitating Speaking Up and Tracking of Silenced GBV and Child Abuse, and The Counter Initiatives
The 2015-16 Malawi DHS report indicates that 60% of GBV and child abuse cases are not reported to the authorities, that is, victims cannot speak out. 90% or more of reported cases are not resolved to the satisfaction of victims, because in 90% of cases, perpetrators are intimate partners, family members or employers and 90% of local social protection and justice institutions lack adequate resources and support.
On the other hand, the 2015 National Child Labour Survey report indicates that 30% of children school drop-out cases are likely a result of child labour or marriages, and other abuses.
As noted above, when the perpetrators of human rights abuse are intimate partners, family members or employers – and the victims are underage, desperate and/or financially dependent on them – they [victims] are most likely to be voiceless, trapped and hopeless. Consequently, the world knows less of the circumstances and the numbers might be high.
In addition, despite government and development partners establishing police and community-based victims support units, GBV/child labour committees as well as GBV by-laws in the villages, their responsiveness is challenged. The perception that the cases are family matters combined with victim’s fear of losing support puts away institutions. It is also reported that functions of these local institutions or structures diminish once projects that brought them in phase out, mainly, due to inadequacy of resources.

A vision of a world where disadvantaged women and children have equal access to social protection, justice and economic empowerment to overcome gender-based violence and abuse, bred the idea of OmniScope.
…specifically, it is an immense hope of a world where all cases of violence and abuse against women and children – are reported to the authorities, – are resolved to the satisfaction of victims, – are not attributed to school drop-out of any child and – are finally eliminated, in all communities participating on OmniScope.
OmniScope has a bold mission, to improve traceability of silenced cases of gender-based violence and child abuse as well as accountability, sustainability and scalability of local and external initiatives.
A new era is here. Villages can now use digital tools and internet to share stories and collect data to speak up and track silenced cases of GBV and child abuse against disadvantaged women and children and the counter initiatives.
